MSKC Training Classes

Flyer for Competitive Obedience & Tracking: MSKC Training Classes Flyer

Mississippi State Kennel Club offers the following training classes.  Please check back often as we plan to add new training classes periodically.

  • Competitive Obedience Training Classes
These classes are designed to prepare you and your dog for obedience competition.  To participate in the competitive obedience training classes, call Shannon at 601-924-8228 or 879-8477.

    • Puppy Class
      Saturdays at 1:00 PM
This is an excellent class for any age dog needing confidence.  This class is designed to nip bad behaviors in the bud and to correct owners’ mistakes before they are made.  Your puppy will be introduced to:

      • People & dog socialization

      • Sit, down, and stand in proper position

      • Recall - Come and front (with explanation of pit falls)

      • Agility - Tunnels and jumps, very low course.

      • Heeling on loose leash ("With me") no jumping on others

      • Dominance training, trials and error, and theory on how dogs learn

      • Stays - Beginning (explain pit falls)

      • "Get it" games for fun training and teaching you how to connect with your dog in a positive way

    • Intermediate Competition
      Mondays at 7:00 PM
To enter this class your dog MUST be able to sit, down, come, and heel (not perfectly) and must be able to do beginner rally maneuvers and stay on a 6 foot leash. This class will teach:

      • Skills needed prior to entering the Novice Ring

      • Proper footwork
      •  Building focus with distractions

      • Skills to create a "pretty picture" or "looking polished" for the judge, managing your dog between exercises, good sportsmanship and etiquette
      • Accountability

  • Conformation Training Classes
Have you always wanted to show a dog but need some training and advice? Or are you an experienced handler with a show pup that needs socialization and a confidence boost?  Our Conformation classes may be the answer for you.
    Group classes: Spring and Fall
    Current Session Begins: TBA
Location: Lakeshore Park at the Reservoir across from the YMCA.
    Limited Availability

    Private lessons: Ongoing

  • Lure Coursing Practice Sessions
Lure Coursing is an exciting event in which dogs chase after a lure, demonstrating their instinct to hunt.  Sighthounds and other coursing breeds may compete in trials while all AKC breeds may participate in Coursing Ability tests.  MSKC will be offering Lure Coursing practice sessions in early 2012.   For more information regarding AKC Lure Coursing and CATs, visit these links: AKC Lure Coursing and AKC Coursing Ability Test.

Contact Mary Crosby to participate in our lure coursing practice sessions

  • Rally Training Classes
Rally is great fun for pets and their owners.  Rally class contains the elements of basic obedience commands but makes it fun by the use of signs set up along the way instead of an instructor issuing instructions.
Contact Donna Webb to participate in our Rally training classes

  • Tracking Training Classes
Our tracking classes teach you to train your dog for participating in AKC Tracking titles.  Shannon will start the tracking classes with an overview/ working session. Just bring your dog, dog treats, a chair, and pencil & pad. Don’t feed your dog that morning so he’ll be eager to track.
    Saturdays at 9:00 AM
    These classes are ongoing.
To participate in the tracking classes or for more details, call:
Shannon at 601-924-8228 or 879-8477 or Cynde at 601-981-0608 or 906-2135
