How to Begin Competing in Conformation or Sporting Events

So you've registered your purebred dog with the AKC and want to begin showing in conformation or performance events.  Or, you've obtained a PAL/ILP or registered your mixed breed in AKC Canine Performance and want to begin training for events.  What now? 

How do you know if your dog is eligible to show in conformation?  What are disqualifications for your breed?  And how do you begin showing?

Where do you find performance training clubs and events?  And what should you pack with you before you head to an event?
